EPHEMERAL PROJECTS FOR THE ETERNAL CITY
The project is dedicated to the founding of a piazza for the Tiber: Piazza Tevere—a living, open-air laboratory for contemporary art and culture in the heart of Rome. The site has the potential to become a world-class contemporary art space beyond the traditional confines of museum, gallery, or concert hall. Driving our proposal is the conviction that art can be a powerful catalyst for urban and social transformation.
EternalTiber is a prelude and a promise by Kristin Jones created with the idealism of many collaborators and volunteers across two decades. This website is both an archive and proposal for Piazza Tevere, a grand open-air site on the Tiber River in the heart of Rome.
Artist Kristin Jones began working on the vision for Piazza Tevere in 2000 and founded Tevereterno onlus in Italy in 2004 proudly envisioning and realizing programing on the Tiber River. Piazza Tevere was inaugurated in 2005 with Jones’s monumental She Wolves frieze. Triumphs and Laments, 2016, by William Kentridge is the most recent ephemeral project produced under Kristin Jones’s artistic direction.

UN PROGETTO MULTIDISCIPLINARE PER CELEBRARE IL TEVERE
La visione e il riconoscimento dello spazio pubblico dedicato alle arti contemporanee site-specific lungo il Tevere a Roma, Piazza Tevere, nascono da un’intuizione dell’artista statunitense Kristin Jones. Il suo entusiasmo contagia gli architetti Carlo Gasparrini, Rosario Pavia e Luca Zevi che insieme a Jones fondano l’associazione Tevereterno Onlus nel 2004. Da allora sono stati coinvolti centinaia tra soci, artisti, professionisti, sostenitori, amici e volontari.
PIAZZA TEVERE: UNA GRANDE “STANZA” PER L’ARTE CONTEMPORANEA
Il tratto compreso tra ponte Sisto e ponte Mazzini è una straordinaria e insolita stanza, grande come il Circo Massimo (500 metri x 100), con pareti che accolgono racconti in movimento (come quello di Kentridge del 2016), un pavimento d’acqua che scorre e può accendersi per valorizzare il suo flusso, un tetto stellato attraversabile da raggi luminosi, uno spazio tridimensionale interpretabile dalla musica. Un luogo monumentale quindi, l’unico spazio del tratto urbano del Tevere in cui i muraglioni sono rettilinei e le due sponde sono, di conseguenza, legate da un rapporto visivo e sonoro diretto.
